FUN & GAMES DOG OBEDIENCE CLASSES

This six-week class is open to all dogs over 16 weeks of age. Using positive reinforcement and motivational methods, agility equipment and fun games, students improve their relationship with their dog and strengthen the dog's ability to focus and obey around distractions. The Beginner classes cover basic obedience commands and are especially effective for the hyper or fearful adolescent dog. In the Intermediate, Advanced and Intro to Agility classes, the students further their skills with tricks, agility, off lead work and more of our innovative training games. Our Tricks classes, Street Smarts classes and Field Trips are terrific for humans who are looking for great socialization and fun stuff to do with their canine friend! We also offer specialty classes, like Rocket Recall, and Canine Good Citizen/Therapy Dog Preparation.

PUPPY HEAD START PROGRAM

The Puppy Head Start Program is a six-week class held in our safe and clean indoor facility, and is designed for puppies 7 to 16 weeks of age. Toy breeds are accepted up to 20 weeks of age. Tuition is $140 per puppy and includes a "PUPPYHOOD SURVIVAL KIT".  The class covers common puppy issues such as house training, mouthing, jumping, the important role of early socialization, leadership and much, much more!  Your puppy will be exposed to lots of new things, and have a great time in the process. Learn how fun dog training can be and let us help you get your pup started off on the right paw!

Is Puppy Class Safe?

We frequently hear clients ask, "My puppy hasn't had all his shots.  My vet said he shouldn't leave the house."  We understand that some veterinarians choose to take an ultra-conservative approach to socialization, preferring for puppies to not leave the house until they have had all their shots.  Their job, as medical professionals, is to look at things from a purely medical perspective.  Many veterinarians and trainers believe, however, that early socialization is vital to the proper emotional and cognitive development of puppies.  Waiting to socialize a puppy until all its vaccinations are complete (at 16-weeks-old) puts the puppy behind the developmental 8-Ball and oftentimes creates behavioral issues that are extremely difficult, if not impossible, to overcome.  Further, the likelihood that a puppy will contract and then also die from a contagious disease (especially when the owner is smart about when and how to socialize) is small compared to the likelihood that the puppy will grow up behaviorally deficient from a lack of early socialization.

As new research findings regarding the role of vaccinations (at what age and how often  re-vaccination should occur in adult dogs) gain popularity among the veterinary community, so does the role of early socialization via carefully planned and implemented puppy socialization classes.  Click here to view an open letter to the veterinary community, written by a veterinarian, in support of the role of early socialization.

And, be sure to click here to review this newly-added position paper written by the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior, about the many benefits of early socialization and why those benefits far outweigh potential risks.

At J9's K9s, the health and well-being of puppies and dogs is our top priority.  All puppy participants are required to have received at least their first round of shots prior to attending our Puppy Head Start class.  We would never encourage attendance in early puppy classes if we felt there was a significant risk of exposure to disease.  Our training facility is sanitized prior to each puppy class session and students are constantly reminded NOT to bring their puppy to class if they suspect any type of illness.  Additionally, we constantly educate our puppy owners on the importance of practicing "Smart Socialization" with puppies when outside of the classroom between class sessions.

We are extremely proud of our current success rate with our Puppy Head Start program and we look forward to helping you help your puppy put his best paw forward!  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at (818) 832-9906.
